NOL Pay App
The NOL Pay app is RTA's own app for reading a NOL card by NFC: hold the card against the back of the phone and the balance, the card type and the recent trips appear on screen. Top ups made inside the app start at AED 5 and are written to the chip on the spot. The same money paid by tag ID on a website waits 45 minutes to 4 hours before a gate will honour it.
What the NOL Pay app actually does
NOL Pay is free on iOS and Android and covers four jobs: it reads a card, tops it up, loads travel passes and, on the right phone, replaces the plastic. The read is why most people install it. A NOL card keeps its balance on the chip rather than in an account, so a phone with NFC is the only thing that can give you the figure when there is no ticket machine in front of you.
One tap gives you more than a number. You see the card type, the credit left and the 10 digit tag ID that RTA uses to identify the card, which saves squinting at the small print on the back. Set that balance against the AED 7.50 the minimum a gate needs before it will let you in and you know where you stand before you leave the house.
An iPhone reads a card in the app exactly as an Android phone does. What it cannot do is carry one, because there is no native NOL card in Apple Wallet. Apple Pay pays for the credit; it does not open the gate. The app also carries NOL Plus points earned on daily Dubai travel.
Top up minimums and limits inside the app
A top up in NOL Pay starts at AED 5 and stops at AED 150 in a single transaction, the ceiling RTA applies to every online channel. Pay by bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, then hold the NOL card to the phone when the app asks for it. The credit is written to the chip during that tap, which is why the app rescues you at the station and a website does not.
Everything paid by tag ID behaves differently. Credit bought on the RTA website, in the RTA Dubai app, in Dubai Now, through Mahboub on WhatsApp or in a bank app sits pending for 45 minutes to 4 hours, then loads on your next tap at a metro gate, a parking meter or a solar machine at a bus stop. The card has its own ceiling. An anonymous Silver or Gold card holds AED 1,000, and that rises to AED 5,000 once the card is registered. RTA charges nothing for the top up itself, though a bank app may add a fee of its own. NFC reads work anywhere, on the platform at Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall station or on a JBR tram stop alike.

Auto top up and travel passes
The app can reload a card on its own once the balance runs low, from AED 20 a time with a ceiling of AED 500 in any one day. It suits a daily commuter who would rather not think about the number, and it is the only hands off option RTA offers on a card you keep in your pocket.
Travel passes load through the same app. An anonymous Silver or Gold card can hold the 7 day pass and nothing longer, priced from AED 50 for one zone to AED 110 for all zones. The 30, 90 and 365 day passes need a registered card or a Blue one, and the break even maths for each pass sits here.
Two rules catch pass holders out. A 30, 90 or 365 day pass can be renewed from five days before it runs out, and any trip outside the zones the pass covers is charged at the normal fare, AED 3 to AED 7.50 on a Silver card. The app shows the pass and the cash balance side by side, so keep a little credit on the card for the trips your pass does not cover.
Your phone as the NOL card
On a compatible handset the app goes one step further and moves the card onto the phone. RTA supports 3 device families for this: Samsung phones, Huawei phones and the Huawei Watch 3 and 3 Pro. 3 card types can make the move, Silver, Gold and Blue, and the fares stay identical once they do.
The swap is one way. As soon as a card is digitised the physical card is permanently invalidated, so there is no keeping the plastic as a spare and no switching back on a day the phone is flat. The setup steps and the catches are here.
A Huawei Watch 3 or 3 Pro works the same way and is the one setup that leaves your hands free at the gate. Battery is the thing to watch: a phone that dies between check in and check out leaves you at a barrier with no way to tap out, and there is no paper backup once the plastic is gone.
When the app will not read a card
Most failed reads are geometry. The NFC antenna sits in a different spot on every phone, usually near the top on Android and around the camera on an iPhone, so slide the card slowly across the back until it registers. Take the card out of a wallet first, because a bank card or building pass next to it confuses the reader, and a thick case does the same.
Some failures belong to the card. A card past its 5 year validity, or one blocked after a loss report, cannot be topped up or activated at all. A card inside its 2 year grace window still spends what is on it but refuses new credit, which reads on screen as a top up that fails for no obvious reason. Each symptom and its fix is set out here.
If the app reads the card but a top up bought elsewhere is missing, that credit is pending rather than lost. Hold the card to the phone in NOL Pay, or tap at any metro gate or parking meter, and it loads. Bus validators are the exception and cannot collect it.
What NOL Pay still cannot do
The app cannot show a balance for a card that is not in your hand. There is no account view of an anonymous card, because an anonymous card belongs to nobody, and that is also why a lost one takes its credit with it unless you paid AED 30 to register it.
On an iPhone the app is a reader and a payment method, never a ticket. Any site or video promising a NOL card in Apple Wallet is describing something RTA has not launched, and the 3 supported device families are all Samsung or Huawei.
