NOL Card Not Working

A NOL card not working at a gate is almost always one of five things: not enough credit, an expired card, a blocked card, a top up still pending, or a Red Ticket out of trips. A metro gate needs AED 7.50 on the card before it will open for anyone, no matter what the trip itself ends up costing. The rest of this page works through the symptoms one at a time.

The gate says the card is not valid

Start with age. Silver, Gold and Blue cards run 5 years from issue and then spend down for 2 more, and at the end of that grace window the card simply stops. RTA treats a trip taken past that point as travel with no valid fare, fined at AED 200. The expiry rules and how to read the date are here.

A block is the second cause. A card reported lost or stolen is stopped at gates, readers and top up channels alike, which is deliberate, and a card you thought you had cancelled behaves exactly this way when somebody else in the household reported it.

A Red Ticket has its own ending. It carries up to 10 single trips or 5 day passes and lasts 90 days, and it works on one mode at a time, so a ticket loaded for the bus will not open a metro gate.

One more cause is worth ruling out in a household with several cards. Two identical Silver cards are easy to swap by accident, and the one in your hand may be the card somebody else already spent down or reported lost. The 10 digit tag ID on the back tells you which is which. The busiest help desks sit at Union, BurJuman and the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall station.

Not enough credit, even though there is money on it

RTA sets an entry threshold rather than charging on the way in. A Silver, Gold or Red card needs AED 7.50 before a gate will open, which is the cost of the longest single trip, so a card holding AED 5 is refused even for a journey that would only cost AED 3.

A Blue Personal card is the exception and opens the gate from AED 3.50. That leniency is also how a Blue card finishes a trip in the negative, since the fare is taken on the way out and can be larger than the credit that was there.

The fix is a machine rather than a phone. A metro ticket vending machine takes AED 20 or more and writes the credit during the transaction, and a ticket office starts at AED 50. All twelve top up channels are compared here.

Check the figure before you reach the station rather than at the barrier. A NOL Pay read takes seconds, a gate display shows it as you tap, and a machine shows it before you pay. A card sitting between AED 3.50 and AED 7.50 is the one that catches people, because it looks funded and behaves as though it is empty.

The top up you paid for has not arrived

Credit bought by tag ID does not go to the card, it goes into a queue. Top ups made on the RTA website, in the RTA Dubai app, in Dubai Now, through Mahboub on WhatsApp or in a bank app take 45 minutes to 4 hours to become collectable, and then need a tap before they exist on the chip.

Collect it at a metro gate, a parking meter, a solar machine at a bus stop or through the NOL Pay app over NFC. Bus validators cannot do it, which is why a top up bought on a bus ride into town is still missing when you reach the metro.

Two deadlines apply. Credit left waiting has to be collected within 180 days, and an expired or blocked card cannot collect it at all. To activate without travelling, check in and out at the same gate within two minutes.

The balance is negative

A negative balance is not an error. Fares come off at check out, so a card that opened a gate with the minimum on it can end below zero after a long trip, and a Blue card starting from AED 3.50 does this routinely on a AED 7.50 journey across more than two zones.

A missed tap out produces the same result from a different direction. So do the card's other uses: parking and retail payments come out of the same credit, up to AED 200 a shop transaction, so an afternoon coffee can be the reason an evening trip is refused.

There is nothing to dispute and nobody to call. The next top up settles the shortfall first, and the card starts working again once the balance is back above the AED 7.50 entry threshold.

No reader will see the card at all

Rule out the obvious first. A card kept next to a bank card, a building pass or a phone case with a magnet in it often fails to read, and so does a bent card. Hold it flat against the reader, out of the wallet, and try a second gate before deciding the card is dead.

In the NOL Pay app the failure is usually geometry rather than damage. The NFC antenna sits in a different place on every handset, so move the card slowly across the back of the phone. A card the app cannot see at any position, and that a ticket machine also refuses, has a chip problem.

What happens next depends on registration. A registered or Blue card is replaced and the balance moves across, at the same fees as a new issuance, AED 70 for a standard Blue card. An anonymous card is a loss: buy a new one at AED 25 and accept that the credit is gone. Registration costs AED 30 and exists precisely for this. Keep the 10 digit tag ID somewhere other than the card itself. A photo of the back, taken on the day you buy it, is what lets RTA identify a card too damaged for a reader to see.

It is nearly always the card

Gates and readers fail far less often than people assume. When one card is refused and the person behind you walks through, the problem is in your hand, and the fastest diagnosis is a ticket machine: it shows the balance, the card status and the reason a top up is refused, all in one screen.

The uncomfortable case is the damaged anonymous card. RTA cannot identify it, cannot block it and cannot move its balance, so up to AED 1,000 can end its life inside a piece of broken plastic. The same rule governs a card that is lost.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the gate say my NOL card is not valid?

The common causes are an expired card, a blocked card or a Red Ticket with no trips left. Cards run 5 years plus a 2 year grace window, and travelling on one after that is a AED 200 fine.

Why is my NOL card balance negative?

Fares are deducted at check out, so a card that entered on the minimum can finish below zero, especially a Blue card that opens a gate from AED 3.50. A missed tap out or a retail purchase of up to AED 200 does the same.

I topped up online and the balance has not changed. What now?

The credit is pending, not lost. It becomes collectable 45 minutes to 4 hours after payment and lands on your next tap at a gate, a parking meter, a bus stop solar machine or in NOL Pay. Collect it within 180 days.

Why can I not top up my card?

Expired and blocked cards are refused at every channel, from the AED 20 machine minimum upward. A card in its grace window still pays fares from the credit it has but will not accept another dirham.

How much balance do I need for the gate to open?

AED 7.50 on a Silver, Gold or Red card, and AED 3.50 on a Blue Personal card. That is a threshold to enter, not the fare, which is AED 3 to AED 7.50 by zone.

My card is damaged. Can I get the money back?

Only if it was registered or is a Blue card, in which case RTA replaces it at the new issuance fee of AED 70 and moves the balance. An anonymous card cannot be identified, so the credit stays with the broken card.

Check the balance before you blame the gate

Ten digits from the back of the card and one tap through to RTA's official balance form.
