Silver NOL card price and what you actually get

A Silver card costs AED 25 at any Dubai Metro ticket office from Union to Expo 2020, at the vending machines beside the gates, and at authorised retailers such as Carrefour and Zoom stores across Dubai, all mapped in the buying guide. That figure splits into an issuance fee of AED 6 and AED 19 of stored credit, so you walk away able to travel immediately. At the standard one zone fare of AED 3 the included credit covers six short trips before you need to top up.

The card holds up to AED 1,000 while it stays anonymous. Register it for AED 30 and the ceiling rises to AED 5,000, which matters if you want to load a 90 or 365 day travel pass rather than pay per trip.

Validity runs 5 years from purchase. After that the card still works for another 2 years on the balance already loaded, but you cannot add more credit to it. A quick look at the expiry date in the NOL Pay app tells you where you stand.

What a Silver card pays on metro, tram and bus

Silver and Blue cards share one fare table, so a Silver card is never more expensive than a personal card for the same trip. Fares depend on how many of the seven RTA fare zones your journey touches rather than the distance, which is why Mall of the Emirates to Ibn Battuta costs the same AED 3 as one stop between Union and Al Rigga.

How to top up a Silver NOL card

A ticket vending machine takes AED 20 or more and writes the credit to the chip as the transaction ends, which is the only method that helps when you are already standing at the gate. What a Silver NOL card costs around Dubai in practice

Real routes make the zone maths concrete. Airport Terminal 3 to Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall crosses from Zone 5 into Zone 6 and costs AED 5. The long run from Deira down to Ibn Battuta Mall or Expo City touches more than two zones at AED 7.50. Short hops inside one zone, such as Mall of the Emirates to the Dubai Marina cluster or BurJuman to ADCB in Karama, stay at AED 3, and the tram through JBR charges the same single zone rate because the whole tram sits in Zone 2.

A five day commute between Deira and DIFC, two zones each way, comes to AED 50 a week on pay per trip. The same week of crossing the whole city, say Al Qusais to Dubai Internet City, runs AED 75. Where else a Silver card pays in Dubai

The same balance covers every RTA mode: Dubai Bus including the feeder routes to metro stations, the tram between Al Sufouh and JBR, and the abras and water buses that cross Dubai Creek between Deira and Bur Dubai. Nothing extra is loaded or activated; the card simply taps in and out on each validator, and a change between modes inside 30 minutes keeps the legs priced as one journey.

Off the network, the card pays at RTA parking meters along Sheikh Zayed Road and across the city, and at more than 2,000 shops and pharmacies with a ceiling of AED 200 per purchase. Park and ride is free for metro users at centrepoint, Life Pharmacy, e& and Jumeirah Golf Estates, which turns the Silver card into the parking ticket as well as the fare. Silver card against the other NOL cards

A Gold card costs exactly the same AED 25 but doubles every metro and tram fare in exchange for the front cabin. A Blue Personal card at AED 70 carries your name, protects the balance if you lose it and is the only card that unlocks student and senior concessions. A Red Ticket at AED 2 suits a visitor making a handful of trips, though at AED 4 to AED 8.50 per journey it costs more each time.
