NOL Card Recharge in Dubai
A NOL card top up takes seconds at a machine and up to four hours online, and the gap catches people out at the gate. A ticket vending machine takes AED 20 or more and credits the card instantly. The NOL Pay app writes credit straight to the card by NFC from AED 5. Anything paid by tag ID on a website or in a banking app sits pending until you tap at a gate or machine.
Every way to recharge a NOL card in 2026
RTA accepts top ups through twelve channels and the minimum differs at each. The cheapest entry point is AED 5 through NOL Pay, S'hail, Mahboub on WhatsApp, the RTA website, a solar powered machine at a bus stop or an authorised agent such as Zoom. Metro ticket vending machines were raised to a AED 20 minimum in March 2025, and a ticket office counter now starts at AED 50. The RTA Dubai app sits between them at AED 30.
Whichever you pick, the online maximum per transaction is AED 150, an anonymous card holds up to AED 1,000 and a registered card AED 5,000. RTA charges nothing for the service itself, though a bank may add its own fee. The minimum balance rules explain how much you need before a gate will open. Machines at every station from Al Rigga in Deira to DMCC in Dubai Marina take cash and card.

Why an online top up does not show at the gate
A NOL card stores its balance on the chip, not in a database, so money paid online has to be written to the card before it counts. RTA queues that credit for 45 minutes to 4 hours, then loads it the next time you tap a metro gate, a parking meter, a bus stop solar machine or the NOL Pay app. Bus validators cannot do it.
Two consequences matter. A top up bought on the way to the station will not rescue you at the barrier, so use the machine in the concourse instead. And pending credit expires: it has to be collected within 180 days. To activate without travelling, tap in and out at the same gate within two minutes.

Auto top up, and when it is worth setting
The NOL Pay app can reload the card automatically when the balance drops, from AED 20 up to a ceiling of AED 500 a day. Because it works over NFC through the app it lands instantly rather than pending, which makes it the one hands off option that will not leave you short at a gate.
It suits daily commuters and anyone with a Blue card carrying a pass, since a travel pass still needs balance for trips outside its zones.

When not to bother topping up online
The website and banking apps look convenient, then leave your money in limbo for hours. Unless you are topping up the night before, a machine at the station is faster, credits instantly and takes cash. Save the online route for planned top ups, not emergencies.
