NOL Card Minimum Balance
The NOL card minimum balance is AED 7.50 on a Silver, Gold or Travel card, and a metro gate will refuse you below it no matter how short the trip is. A Blue Personal card opens at AED 3.50, and a Red Ticket needs at least one journey loaded onto it. The AED 7.50 figure matches the top tier fare of AED 7.50, which is why it sits where it does.
The AED 7.50 rule at the gate
RTA checks the balance on the way in, not on the way out. Because the system cannot know at check in how many zones you will cross, it asks for the highest possible single fare up front: AED 7.50, the same as a journey crossing more than two zones on a Silver or Blue card.
That is why a one stop hop from Union to Al Rigga, priced at AED 3, still needs AED 7.50 sitting on the card before the gate opens. The unused portion is not taken. Once you check out, only the fare for the zones you actually crossed comes off.
A new Silver card arrives with AED 19 on it, comfortably above the minimum, so the rule usually bites later in the life of a card rather than on day one.

Why a Blue card opens the gate at AED 3.50
The Personal card is treated differently because RTA knows who holds it. A Blue Personal card opens a gate at AED 3.50 rather than AED 7.50, which is enough to cover a one zone fare of AED 3 with room to spare.
That same AED 3.50 is the figure RTA uses for activating credit that is still pending on a Personal card. Concession holders benefit twice over, since their fares run AED 1.50 to AED 3.75 and the gate threshold does not move.
A Red Ticket has no balance to be short of
The Red Ticket does not hold money. It holds journeys, up to 10 of them or up to 5 day passes, bought at AED 4 to AED 8.50 each when you load them. A ticket with nothing left on it is refused at the gate exactly like a card under the minimum.
The other limit is time. A Red Ticket expires 90 days after purchase, and a ticket tapped after that counts as an invalid card, which RTA fines at AED 200.
What happens when the balance is short
The gate simply stays shut and the display shows the balance. There is no penalty for a refused tap, and no fare is deducted, so a card holding AED 5 is not charged anything on the attempt. What you cannot do is follow someone through: RTA fines AED 200 for travelling without a valid fare.
Buses and trams work the same way on the same threshold, and a low balance discovered mid journey is the awkward case, because you have already checked in. The fare for the zones crossed still comes off at check out, which can leave the card unable to start the next trip.
How to fix a low NOL card balance at the station
Speed depends on the channel. A ticket machine takes AED 20 or more and writes the credit to the chip as the transaction closes; a ticket office starts at AED 50; the NOL Pay app loads from AED 5 over NFC and is just as immediate. Solar machines at bus stops and authorised agents start at AED 5.
Credit bought by tag ID on the RTA website, in a bank app or through Dubai Now behaves differently. It sits pending for 45 minutes to 4 hours, then loads on your next tap at a gate, a parking meter or a bus stop machine, and it has to be collected within 180 days. Bus validators cannot activate it.

Where the minimum balance rule catches people out
The rule is at its most annoying on a short commute. Somebody making two one zone trips a day at AED 3 has to keep AED 7.50 on the card at all times, which is more than a day of travel sitting idle. There is no way to opt out of it, and no card type below the Personal card gets a lower threshold.
The bigger trap is topping up online at the wrong moment. Credit bought by tag ID is not on the card until you tap at a gate, parking meter or bus stop machine, so an online top up made on the bus stop bench does nothing for the bus you are about to board. Only a machine, an office or NOL Pay over NFC fixes a balance immediately.

Why is the NOL card minimum balance AED 7.50?
