NOL Card in Apple Wallet

The status in 2026: no native NOL pass

Apple Wallet holds transit cards for a list of cities that Apple and the local operator have built together, and Dubai is not on it. No setting, no app and no workaround adds a NOL card to Wallet on an iPhone or an Apple Watch, and a card added as a scanned image would be a picture rather than a fare.

RTA's own position has not moved: digital NOL cards live inside the NOL Pay app on compatible Samsung phones, Huawei phones and the Huawei Watch 3 and 3 Pro. 3 card types can be moved onto those devices, Silver, Gold and Blue.

Pages and videos promising an Apple Wallet setup are describing either Samsung Wallet or the payment side of Apple Pay. Neither one puts a fare on your iPhone.

The confusion has a source. Apple Pay and Apple Wallet share a screen on an iPhone, so paying for a NOL top up with Apple Pay looks very close to using a card stored in Wallet. The money does move through Apple; the fare does not. The credit lands on the plastic in your pocket, and the plastic is still what the gate reads.

What an iPhone can do today

The NOL Pay app turns an iPhone into a card reader. Hold the plastic against the back of the phone and the app returns the balance, the card type and the 10 digit tag ID, which is the fastest balance check available anywhere outside a station. The app is covered in detail here.

Apple Pay works for paying, not for travelling. Top ups inside NOL Pay run from AED 5 to AED 150 and are written straight to the chip during an NFC tap, so the money is usable immediately. The RTA Dubai app takes Apple Pay too, from AED 30, though credit bought there waits 45 minutes to 4 hours before a tap collects it.

S'hail accepts Apple Pay on the same terms, from AED 5. All twelve top up routes and their minimums are compared here, which matters more on an iPhone than on a Samsung, because the card in your pocket is the only thing that opens the gate.

Passes load from the phone as well. A registered card takes the 30, 90 and 365 day passes, and an anonymous one is limited to the 7 day pass at AED 110 for all zones. The pass maths is worked through here, and none of it depends on the phone brand. Until that changes, an iPhone still checks a card in seconds anywhere in Dubai, from DXB arrivals to a Dubai Marina tram stop.

Why the card is not there yet

A transit card inside Apple Wallet is a joint build. The operator has to issue the card into Apple's secure element and Apple has to support the scheme in that market, which is why cities arrive on Wallet one at a time rather than all at once. RTA has announced no such launch for NOL.

Android is different because RTA distributes its digital card through its own app on manufacturer hardware it has certified. That is how Samsung and Huawei phones can carry a card while a generic Android handset cannot, and it is the same reason an iPhone read is possible while an iPhone tap is not.

Neither point is a technical limit on the iPhone itself. The hardware reads and writes NOL cards perfectly well inside NOL Pay, which is why the balance check works. What is missing is an issued card, and only RTA and Apple together can create one. RTA has announced no partnership and opened no waiting list, so there is nothing to sign up for in the meantime.

What RTA's upgrade changes

RTA is rebuilding the NOL system around accounts rather than chips. Dubai Media Office put the programme at 72 per cent complete on 5 July 2026, with the remaining phases due by the end of the first quarter of 2027, and the published scope includes QR tickets, account linked next generation cards and payment at the gate with bank cards and phone wallets.

A bank card held in Apple Wallet and tapped at a gate is a payment rather than a NOL pass, and that is the route most transit systems take when a native transit card is not on the table. It would give iPhone owners a phone tap without RTA ever issuing an Apple Wallet card.

None of it is live yet, and RTA has not published a date for phone wallet acceptance specifically. Treat 2027 as the earliest realistic horizon and keep carrying the card until the gates say otherwise.

The practical setup for iPhone owners

Carry a physical card and manage it from the phone. A Silver card at AED 25 includes AED 19 of credit, and NOL Pay handles the top ups, the balance checks and the pass loading, so the plastic only ever needs to reach the gate.

Register it for AED 30 if the balance is worth protecting, since that also lifts the ceiling from AED 1,000 to AED 5,000. Auto top up inside the app, from AED 20 with a daily cap of AED 500, gets you close to the convenience a wallet card would offer.

Learn the gate routine and the phone matters less than you think. One tap in, one tap out and a card kept above the AED 7.50 entry threshold covers metro, tram and bus, with fares from AED 3 to AED 7.50 by zone.

If a phone based card is the whole point, the honest answer is a Samsung or a Huawei. The digital card setup is here, along with the catch that the plastic is permanently invalidated once you make the move.
