Dubai Metro Gold Class
Dubai Metro Gold Class is the front cabin of every train, with wider leather seats, more legroom and a windscreen view down the track, and it costs exactly double the standard fare: AED 6 to AED 15 a trip against AED 3 to AED 7.50. Access comes from holding a Gold NOL card rather than buying an upgrade at the platform. Take a seat there without one and the fine is AED 100.
What Gold Class is on a Dubai Metro train
Every metro train has a Gold Class section at the front, marked with gold floor stickers on the platform and gold trim on the platform screen doors. Inside it there are fewer seats, they are wider and leather, and the front window looks straight down the track because the trains are driverless. Behind it sits the Women and Children cabin, then the standard cabins.
The Dubai Tram carries a Gold Class section too, at the same double fare. Buses do not: a Gold card tapped on a bus is charged the ordinary fare, because there is no premium cabin to sell.
Nothing about the journey itself changes. Gold Class rides the same train at the same speed, stops at the same stations and arrives at the same time. What you buy is space and a seat, which on the Red Line at 08:15 is a real product and at 14:00 on a Tuesday is not.
Scarcity is the reason the cabin works at all. Gold Class is a section at the front of the train rather than a carriage of its own, so it holds a small share of the passengers a full train carries, and the double fare is what keeps it that way. Take the premium away and the seats would go in a week.

What Gold Class costs
The Gold premium is a straight doubling of the standard fare on metro and tram, tier for tier. A one zone trip is AED 6 instead of AED 3, two adjacent zones AED 10 instead of AED 5, and anything wider AED 15 instead of AED 7.50. A tourist on a paper ticket pays the Red Ticket Gold rate, AED 8 to AED 17.
Passes double as well. A 30 day all zones pass is AED 700 on a Gold card against AED 350 on a Silver one, and the 7 day version is AED 220 against AED 110. The daily fare cap quoted for Gold is AED 40, though that figure comes from RTA's 2014 tariff revision and is not restated on the current fares page.
The premium applies per journey rather than per leg. A metro trip followed by a tram ride inside the 30 minute transfer window is one journey, and a Gold card is not charged the premium twice for the same zone across that change. Miss the window and the second leg becomes a fresh journey at the full Gold rate.
| Journey | Silver or Blue | Gold Class | Red Ticket | Red Ticket Gold |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Within 1 zone | AED 3 | AED 6 | AED 4 | AED 8 |
| 2 adjacent zones | AED 5 | AED 10 | AED 6 | AED 12 |
| More than 2 zones | AED 7.50 | AED 15 | AED 8.50 | AED 17 |
| 30 day pass, all zones | AED 350 | AED 700 | Not available | Not available |

How to ride Gold Class
You need a Gold NOL card, which costs AED 25 over the counter and arrives with AED 19 of credit on it, the same price and credit as a Silver card. The difference is what it charges: a Gold card pays the Gold fare on every metro and tram trip automatically, so there is no button to press and no upgrade to buy at the platform.
Visitors can get the same seat without buying a Gold card by asking for a Gold Class Red Ticket, priced per trip at AED 8 to AED 17. That is the only realistic way to ride Gold Class for a single journey. The Gold card page covers balances, validity and how it compares with the alternatives.
One point catches people out: a Gold card charges the Gold fare whichever cabin you actually sit in, and it charges it even when the Gold section is full. There is no refund and no standard rate fallback. Anyone who rides Gold Class occasionally is usually better off carrying a Silver card for ordinary days and buying a Gold Class Red Ticket for the days it matters.

The rules and the fine for sitting there
Gold Class is a reserved area under RTA's metro rules, and sitting in one without the entitlement carries a fine of AED 100. The same amount and the same rule cover the Women and Children cabin, and inspectors do check both, most often at Union, BurJuman and Mall of the Emirates where the trains fill.
The fine is not a fare adjustment. It is a penalty on top of whatever you already paid, and it applies even if you moved into the cabin because the standard section was full. RTA publishes 22 metro penalties in total, from AED 100 for eating on a train up to AED 2,000 for vandalism. The full list is here.
A Gold Personal card is issued to adults only, so a student or senior concession cannot be combined with Gold Class. Concession holders pay AED 1.50 to AED 3.75 in the standard cabins instead.

When Gold Class is worth double
The premium buys a seat, so it is worth most where a seat is least likely. The Red Line between BurJuman and DMCC at peak is the clearest case: BurJuman alone handled 17.8 million riders in 2025, and a standard cabin northbound at 08:00 can mean standing for 40 minutes.
It also earns its price with luggage. An airport run from Airport Terminal 3 to the Marina in the standard cabin during peak hours with two suitcases is a genuinely difficult trip, and AED 10 against AED 5 is a small premium for the space to stand with them.
Off peak, it is hard to justify. Between 10:00 and 16:00 most standard cabins have seats free, and the extra AED 3 per short trip buys nothing you could not get by walking one carriage back. The fare calculator prices both cabins for any pair of stations so you can see the difference on your own route.
There is a middle option people forget. The Women and Children cabin sits directly behind Gold Class, is free to use for those it is intended for, and is usually emptier than the standard cars. A woman travelling with a child at peak gets much of the benefit of Gold Class without the premium, and the AED 100 fine applies to anyone else who uses it.

What double the fare does not buy
Gold Class does not guarantee a seat. The cabin is small, and on the busiest Red Line services at 08:15 it fills as well, at which point you have paid AED 10 to stand in a nicer place. A Gold card charges the premium regardless, so on those mornings the money is gone whatever happens.
It also buys nothing at all on a bus, where a Gold card falls back to the standard fare, and nothing on the marine services. For most riders the honest answer is that a Silver card plus the occasional Gold Class Red Ticket costs less over a month than a Gold card used every day, unless you commute at peak on a long Red Line run and value the seat every single time.

Frequently asked questions
How much is Dubai Metro Gold Class?
Double the standard fare: AED 6 within one zone, AED 10 across two adjacent zones and AED 15 beyond that. On a paper Red Ticket the Gold rate is AED 8 to AED 17 per trip.
Can I upgrade to Gold Class for one trip?
Not on a Silver or Blue card. The only single trip route into the cabin is a Gold Class Red Ticket, at AED 8 to AED 17. A Gold NOL card charges the Gold fare on every metro and tram trip, not just the ones you choose.
What is the fine for sitting in Gold Class without a Gold card?
AED 100. Gold Class counts as a reserved area, the same category as the Women and Children cabin, and the fine is charged on top of the fare you already paid. Inspectors check regularly at the busier stations.
Does Gold Class work on the Dubai Tram and buses?
The tram has a Gold Class section at the same double fare. Buses do not, so a Gold card tapped on a bus is charged the ordinary fare of AED 3 to AED 7.50.
How much does a Gold NOL card cost?
AED 25, including AED 19 of travel credit, which is the same price as a Silver card. The card itself is not the expense; the doubled fare on every trip is.
Is there a daily cap on Gold Class fares?
A cap of AED 40 for Gold cards was set out in RTA's 2014 tariff revision, against AED 20 for Silver and Blue. It does not appear on the current RTA fares page, so treat it as a 2014 figure rather than a confirmed one.
Can students use a concession in Gold Class?
No. Gold Personal cards are issued to adults only, so the 50% student, senior and Social Affairs concessions apply in the standard cabins at AED 1.50 to AED 3.75 a trip.
